Those who suffer from migraines know that the excruciating, throbbing pain is not the same as a normal headache. Yet most non-sufferers don’t seem to understand that. Hence, once and for all: these 11 comments really don’t want migraine patients to hear anymore.
1. I know how it feels: I also have a headache
Yes, migraines are a kind of headache, but trust us: it’s completely different. An attack can last three to four days and you also suffer from sensitivity to light and sound, nausea and even vomiting. It’s really not just a headache.
2. Then take a pain reliever!
Uh, we’ll try, but they don’t always work. The problem is that migraines also affect the stomach, which prevents painkillers from being properly absorbed.
3. Are there any medicines for that?
Yup, they exist, but unfortunately they don’t work for everyone. It may take a while to find the right medicine. And even then – three-yard unfortunately – you are not completely rid of it.
4. However, you don’t look sick
Believe it or not, migraine is an invisible illness. We can often hide what we feel. Anyway, at the beginning of the attack anyway, because a little later we often squirm in the seat.
5. You shouldn’t eat chocolate anymore
Yes, chocolate can trigger an attack… in some patients. Everyone has their own triggers, and they don’t always trigger an attack. When we eat chocolate, we know we can.
6. You just have to drink more water
It is true that dehydration can trigger a migraine attack, but drinking water doesn’t help even when the attack has started. Plus, chances are we’re too nauseous to drink. Unfortunately, three yards.
7. You simply cannot cope with stress
Stress – and the disappearance of stress – can indeed trigger an attack, but that has nothing to do with our ability to deal with it. It is a trigger, not a cause of the condition.
8. Sleep a little, it will pass
All well and good, but often we are just too nauseous to lie down in a migraine attack. The pain is also often so bad that we do not keep knowing with our body, let alone that we can sleep.
9. You just have to do something to take your mind off the pain
Going out and exercising, you say? Or watch TV? Quite difficult, if any activity that requires keeping our eyes open is impossible …
10. You’re not going to cancel our plans for later, are you?
No matter how bad we feel: it often has to be. There is simply nothing you can do with migraines, except hang in the armchair. And the guilt you give us, we have nothing …
11. It will pass…
Migraine is a chronic condition that persists for decades – or even those who are unlucky – for life. So it is not just “about”. No matter how hard we wish.
