With the right app, the smartphone can do everything – at least that’s what the advertising promises. So can the cell phone also be a bike navigation and training companion on sporty trips? In any case, there is a huge selection of apps. But before you head out into the countryside, you first have to attach your cell phone to the handlebars. BIKE BILD tested twelve mounts!
Winner of the BIKE BILD mobile phone holder test: Quadlock
The Quadlock system offers custom-fit cases for numerous popular smartphone models. After a small turn, the cover sits absolutely stable and mechanically locked on the base. The mobile phone is released via a sleeve or a lever. The combination of base, cover and accessories can be put together as desired in the manufacturer’s online shop. An exciting accessory is the Qi charger for powering the e-bike. In the test, the Quadlock mobile phone holder received 40 out of 40 points and thus a grade of 1.0 (very good).
Winner of the BIKE BILD mobile phone holder test: SP Connect
In addition to basic brackets for every taste, SP Connect has clever accessories such as bags or Qi chargers. The custom-fit mobile phone cases are available for many common smartphone models. The 90-degree rotation to attach and detach the phone requires space, which must be taken into account between the e-bike display, bell, etc. Some bike manufacturers offer an SP-Connect base on the bike ex works. In the test, the mobile phone holder from SP Connect received 40 out of 40 points and thus a grade of 1.0 (very good).
Price-performance winner Enoneo aluminum universal clamp holder
The Enoneo clamp bracket made of stable aluminum is firmly attached to the handlebars with two screws. What is good against thieves could at least be visually annoying when driving without a cell phone. The viewing angle on the display can be optimally aligned via a ball joint. The retaining clips enclose the phone securely. In connection with thick cases, however, the holder becomes too narrow. Connections and control buttons remain accessible. In the test, the cell phone holder from Enoneo received 28 out of 40 points and thus a grade of 2.2 (good).
The test results at a glance
The expensive piece has to be stable, of course. And please also easy to read, without reflections. The mount shouldn’t be too expensive either. Optional weather protection and maybe a charging option, otherwise the battery will quickly run out. The problem with water protection has been resolved for most modern smartphones – the cell phone manufacturers have taken care of that.
Special outdoor smartphones still have their place. The internal components are also trimmed for higher loads. If the mobile phone wobbles, it is difficult to read. Therefore, the distance between the handlebars and the cell phone should be as small as possible – long lever arms increase the vibrations.
Basically, when choosing the right bicycle cell phone holder: it is better to rely on systems with a custom-fit case than on a universal holder. You should avoid charging on the go if possible, unless it works wirelessly using the Qi standard. Because the tiny plug connections are not designed for the constant wobbling on the bike.
