Don’t just listen – be an active listener
Listening alone is not enough. Sympathetic people hear a person really to when they talk to her.
Active listening requires four steps, writes Basil Chiasson: listening, interpreting, evaluating and answering.
Step one means to leave everything behind and really watch out. Next, you should “rewrite what you heard in other words and ask questions,” she suggests.
Evaluating means holding back with hasty conclusions and judgments: “Be sure that you have all the relevant information before you give your opinion.” And finally: “Give feedback to show your conversation partner that you are him heard. “
