The silver star on the bonnet, the blue dot in the car. There are brands that stand for the German economic miracle, for inventiveness, engineering and market leadership. Take Blaupunkt, for example: Founded almost 100 years ago in Berlin, Blaupunkt developed the first car radio in Europe in 1932. The device weighs an impressive 15 kilos, has five glass tubes and costs 465 marks – about a quarter of a whole motor vehicle. 20 years later, the German engineers brought the world’s first FM car radio onto the market, and in 1969 the world’s first stereo model.

Made in Germany for the world

From 1974, Blaupunkt car radios use a small lamp to indicate stations that broadcast traffic information. The ARI system (Automobile Driver Broadcasting Information), which was largely developed by Blaupunkt, is becoming the standard in Germany. The first model with a built-in CD player followed as early as 1983. And finally, in 1989, the world’s first mass production of navigation systems started with the Travelpilot IDS – in tranquil Hildesheim. Blaupunkt, which has been part of the Bosch Group for decades, had its headquarters there at the time. Made in Germany for the whole world: of the 5750 employees, more than half were women as early as 1974.

Over 500,000 car radios are stolen every year

In the 1980s and 1990s, Blaupunkt was one of the coveted brands of audiophile car fans. Motto: factory radio out, retrofit model in. Then a few fretwork on the hat shelf, new loudspeakers in – and the rolling disco is ready. If you are not careful, you will be able to get rid of your audio system quickly. When the Bremen model came onto the market in 1986, BILD wrote: “Over 500,000 car radios are stolen in Germany every year. The thieves’ favorite brand: Blaupunkt Bremen (948 marks).” It’s kind of an award … (By the way, BILD recommends a tear gas alarm system for 290 marks as an antidote).

From Hildesheim to Hameln

Today the plant in Hildesheim is history. But even after many economic ups and downs, the car radio division is still a Lower Saxony company. The brand now belongs to Evo-Sales GmbH based in the no less tranquil Hameln. There, Blaupunkt employees develop car multimedia products, car radios, sound components, vehicle antennas and driver assistance systems. Foldable e-bikes with the traditional name Blaupunkt also come from here – and are sold in more than 67 countries. Blaupunkt has never forgotten its great history. And so there is now a retro line that is reminiscent of old times. With a car radio that was extremely popular even then – and not just for thieves.

A classic is back! Blaupunkt has reissued the legendary Bremen SQR 46 model. 35 years after the original comes the successor: the Bremen SQR 46 DAB. In a classic look, but with the latest technology. Inside is a DAB + digital tuner for crystal clear sound. The numerous interfaces are new. Where the cassette drive used to be, two USB ports, an aux connection and an SDHC slot are hidden behind the cover. Blaupunkt and Bluetooth? Of course, it works too! This makes it easy to pair the cell phone and stream music. A DAB + window antenna is included. This makes the Bremen SQR 46 DAB ideal for youngtimers – not least because of the low installation depth. The lighting color can be selected individually. Blaupunkt also has matching speakers for the retro radio in its range: The spherical speakers for the hat shelf are back! Blaupunkt produced the once most popular car speakers from 1973 to 1986.
