The smartest people are able to admit if they are unfamiliar with a particular concept. They are not afraid to admit to not knowing something. But clever people are willing to learn.
Justin Kruger and David Dunning found in a study that less intelligent people tend to overestimate their cognitive abilities than more intelligent ones. In one experiment, students who had received little points in an admission test to a law school overestimated the number of questions they answered correctly by almost 50 percent. Those who did very well underestimated the number of questions they answered correctly.
