990 Pro: Samsung presents the successor to its M.2 SSD at Gamescom

At the Gamescom games fair, Samsung is presenting its new Pro version of the popular M.2 SSD: the 990 Pro.

Samsung presented a successor to the popular M.2 SSDs from the Pro series at Gamescom. The NVME-SSD 990 Pro is described by Samsung as a high-end gaming SSD for consoles and PCs and is the direct successor to the successful 980 Pro. However, not only gamers benefit from the fast read and write speeds.
On paper, the SSD can convince with the performance data: The read speeds are specified as up to 7450 MB/s and the write speeds as up to 6900 MB/s, which is a performance plus of 55 percent compared to the predecessor and the currently highest speed via the PCIe 4.0 interface. Furthermore, the new 990 Pro is said to offer a 50 percent improvement in performance per watt compared to the 980 Pro.

The combination of Dynamic Thermal Guard and the Heat Spreader is intended to ensure more effective protection against overheating. As input and output operations, the 990 Pro should offer a maximum of 1,400,000 IOPS for reading and 1,550,000 for writing.
According to Samsung, the market launch is in October 2022. At the launch, the M.2 SSD should be available in versions with 1 and 2 TB of storage space. The 1 TB model is said to be available for EUR 174.90, the 2 TB version for EUR 324.90. However, further models are already planned for 2023. These include a 4 TB model and variants with heat sink and RGB lighting.
