If you want a good cocktail, you don’t have to go to a bar. Some mixed drinks can easily be prepared by you at home.
Aleksey Reznikov is the chief bartender at Garret West, a cocktail bar in the New York City borough of Manhattan.
The expert told “Insider” which cocktails can also be easily prepared at home by amateurs. For some drinks that are served in bars or clubs, many ingredients are required that are not normally found in every household – but not with these six drinks.
For the Gimlet, the Paloma, the Moscow Mule, the Negroni, the Aperol Spritz and the Old Fashioned you don’t need a lot of things or a special skill. Everyone can easily prepare them in cash quality, said Reznikov.
In the picture gallery you can see the six cocktails including the correct preparation.

A gimlet is usually made with gin. If you don’t have one, you can also use other types of alcohol.
You only need very few ingredients for this cocktail. According to Aleksey Reznikov, chief bartender at the New York cocktail bar Garret West, you have to mix about 220 ml of lime juice with the same amount of simple syrup – which consists only of sugar and water. Then add 60 ml of gin and shake the mixture. Then you can serve the cocktail on ice.
According to Reznikov, the gin can also be replaced by tequila, vodka, rum or bourbon. “If you switch to brown spirits, lemon juice is preferable,” he adds.
Technically speaking, the name of the cocktail changes with the alcohol used. A light rum gimlet is actually a classic daiquiri. Reznikov doesn’t mind. “As long as you like it, that’s all that matters,” he says.

If you have tequila at home, you can try making a paloma.
For this stylish cocktail you need a teaspoon of sugar, 15 ml of lime juice, 45 ml of grapefruit juice and 60 ml of tequila.
Mix the ingredients together into a drink, fill it into a tall glass with fresh ice and add a splash of seltzer water. For example, you can use a slice of grapefruit to garnish. And if you have salt on hand, you can salt the rim of the glass as you like.
If you are not a tequila fan, you can use mescal or vodka instead.
A Moscow Mule can easily be prepared with vodka and ginger beer.
This cocktail consists of only three ingredients: a dash of lime juice, 60ml vodka and ginger beer.
Reznikov recommends pouring the lime juice together with the vodka in a tall glass, filling the rest with ginger beer and garnishing the cocktail with a lime. If you have Angostura Bitter at home, you can also add some of it.
If you don’t like vodka, you can replace it with Mescal, Tequila, Gin, Bourbon or Rye Whiskey. The same applies here as for the Gimlet. If brown alcohol is used, the lime juice should be replaced with lemon juice.

If you want to bring some cocktail bar atmosphere home and have a little more than just alcohol and juice at home, Reznikov recommends a negroni.
If you have sweet wormwood and Campari on hand, you can easily prepare this cocktail.
To make a negroni, Reznikov recommends 30ml of sweet wormwood, Campari and gin. Mix everything in a tin cup and then enjoy it on ice. The cocktail can be garnished with an orange slice or a lemon spiral.
According to Reznikov, you can also replace the gin with mescal, tequila, bourbon or rye whiskey.
“The Mescal Negroni is my favorite negroni,” added the bartender.

For an Aperol spray, how else would you need a bottle of Aperol.
For Reznikov the Aperol-Spritz is the perfect summer drink.
“They make it easy for you,” he says. “You can find the instructions on the back of the bottle.”
The recipe can be viewed on the Aperol website: First, ice is placed in a glass. Prosecco and Aperol are then added in equal parts. Then a splash of soda water is added and the drink is garnished with an orange slice.
To give the summer drink an extra kick, you can also add tequila or vodka. One sip and you will feel like you are on vacation in Italy.

If you want to make an old fashioned, you need bourbon.
Mix three sprinkles of Angostura bitter and three sprinkles of orange bitter with a teaspoon of plain syrup and 60ml of bourbon. All the ingredients are mixed directly in the serving glass and garnished with an orange spiral, explains Reznikov.
“If you don’t have orange bitters, you don’t have to worry. Then use only four to five sprays of Angostura, ”he adds.
Bourbon can be replaced by mescal, tequila or rum. Reznikov says the latter is one of his favorite variations.
