Activate “Mobile Hotspot” in Windows 11

Windows 11 can share its own network connection with other devices within range. To do this, simply activate the “mobile hotspot” that Microsoft includes as standard. Then connect to the hotspot via WLAN or Bluetooth and start surfing.

There are various purposes for a WLAN hotspot in Windows 11, for example in a hotel: You use the hotel Internet connection on your notebook. Now you would like to surf the web with your mobile phone and tablet, but the hotel only allows you to use it with one device. Or your DSL connection goes on strike and you have temporarily connected your mobile phone to your PC for surfing. The other devices in the home network also go online wirelessly via the Windows 11 hotspot. The hotspot is just as useful for a temporary guest WLAN: Instead of revealing the router WLAN password, you enable the Internet via a hotspot, which you then delete.

Fourth variant:

Your provider only provides a DSL modem that is attached to your PC. Up to eight PCs and smart TVs in the household can surf the web via the Windows 11 hotspot.

Windows 11 bundles the settings for sharing the Internet connection in a dialog window. After clicking on “Edit”, define the name and password that will protect the hotspot access.

Windows 11 makes Internet connection sharing easy. Open the Settings app and go to “Network and Internet -› Mobile Hotspot ”. For now, leave the “Mobile Hotspot” switch at the top in the “Off” position.

In the “Share my Internet connection from” drop-down box, specify whether you want to share the wired Ethernet connection on your computer or the WiFi connection. The “Release for” drop-down box follows below. With the default setting “WLAN”, Windows 11 creates a new small WLAN that other devices can use to connect to your Internet connection. Your computer must have a WLAN adapter so that everything works. “Bluetooth” shares the Internet via Bluetooth. Your computer and all devices that want to surf the web require a Bluetooth adapter.

For a WiFi hotspot, go to “Edit” under “Properties”. If you do not see the button, first click on “Properties” and then on “Edit”. In the next dialog you define the network name for the new WLAN and the password. In the “Network frequency range” field, you can limit your hotspot to the 2.4 or 5 GHz band. Normally you do not need to change the default setting “All available”.

Back in the main hotspot dialog, click on the switch behind “Mobile hotspot”. This activates the surfing WLAN. After a few seconds, the hotspot will be ready for use in Windows 11. It then appears in the list of available WLANs within range of the other devices.

Windows only displays the “Energy-saving mode” switch after the hotspot has been switched on. It deactivates the hotspot to save the notebook battery as soon as all existing connections have been disconnected. Deactivate it if you want the hotspot to be available all the time.
