The Hyundai works driver will be on the road dual in 2021. In TCR Germany he drives the i30 N TCR, while in the world league he takes the wheel of the newer Hyundai Elantra N TCR.
For Engstler it wasn’t the first season in TCR Germany. Already in 2017 and 2018 he drove in his father’s racing team. After his debut year, which he finished in twelfth place, the Allgäu was runner-up in his second season. Strong: At the 2018 season finale, he overtook nine cars on the track in one lap.
At the latest then it became clear that Engstler had inherited the touring car genes of his father Franz (60). Papa Engstler: “I can see from his driving style that he will one day be one of the greats in the sport. He drives very intelligently and consistently. ”Engstler senior started his active time in the DTM and the World Touring Car Championship and clinched a class win in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring.
With over 700 trophies, he sets the bar high for his son. Franz is an important factor in Luca’s career: “My dad’s influence is great. I discuss every step with him, I value his advice very much and I owe him a lot. ”
Engstler jr. more and more from. With ten championship titles now, he is the most successful TCR driver in the world. But he doesn’t want to call himself the best German touring car driver. “There are many strong drivers in touring car racing,” says the 21-year-old. “But I’m not afraid to measure myself against the best.”
He does not yet know how things will continue in 2022. “The goal is to continue in the TCR area, but the future is still unclear.” In addition, his factory driver contract with Hyundai is expiring. An extension is open. That’s why we’re looking in all directions, including the DTM.
Engstler: “The DTM has become even more interesting for me with the GT3 switch. I’m pleasantly surprised. ”However, a WTCR title remains one of his“ greatest goals ”. This year he can fulfill his dream at least in the junior category.
