“Do you have a minute? The weirdest things. From a robbed apartment to a stay in a monastery in Thailand to great parties and unexpected encounters with a couple of art dealers in Istanbul. ”
“A much too long bus journey that I made as a teenager to a destination in Croatia. Or the time I flew from Paris to London around Christmas to find out once in London that our place to sleep had been canceled. Everything was full and we ended up in a sparse hostel. ”
“Fortunately I never lost my suitcases. Well almost my foot! A woman stood on a moving walk at Schiphol who did not understand how her luggage trolley worked. Her cart was on the brakes and she didn’t know how to get it off when she got to the top. The moving walk naturally continued. My foot was pushed through her luggage and cart. Almost missed my plane. Still made it, with two feet. ”
“My phone. But actually I also like to travel without a connection. ”
Always with you
“A small notebook for memories, recipes, ideas.”
Most beautiful meeting
“In Istanbul with friends of friends who really took me everywhere, showed everything to taste and see. In a way that is unusual here. I almost moved there. ”
Strangest local food
Thai pie with coconut, pandan, taro, garlic and caramelised onions. Fantastic!”
“In Marrakesh, I received an unforgettable upgrade at Dar Sabra, a hotel outside the city. The suite I slept in had a bed on a stage and an enormous bathtub and was so large that I easily got through my 30 minutes of exercise by walking from the toilet to the bed and back again. Art everywhere, a fireplace and beautiful carpets and one very long wall consisted entirely of a window. I overlooked a pool. Magic.”
“The airplane as a means of transport. I like traveling by train better. Actually, the bus too, if it stays below five o’clock. You see a lot more, it feels like a school trip and you don’t have to breathe each other’s air for hours on end. ”
