Two years ago, Amazon Game Studios and Athlon Games announced a massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) based on JRR Tolkien’s fantasy novel “Lord of the Rings”. The game was intended to play well before the events of the book and provide new insights into the Tolkien universe.
After the sale of Athlon Games owner Leyou to the Chinese Tencent Holding, the project has now burst, as reported by Bloomberg. The contract negotiations resulting from the sale led to a dispute between Amazon and Tencent, which ultimately resulted in the game being canceled, it said, citing people familiar with the matter.
The Amazon team from the project will now be assigned to other games of the company, according to Amazon Game Studios. The game studio has been consistently hapless since it started in 2014 and is still waiting for success. Games were either canceled or flopped, and internal problems were also rumored.
However, Amazon is still working on the “Lord of the Rings”. The first season of the TV series for the fantasy epic will cost the US company, as recently announced, a whopping 465 million dollars.
