AMD wants to improve the performance of its GPUs with two drivers, one of the drivers is only aimed at current models.
A new preview driver aims to improve the performance of current AMD GPUs.
Immediately after the release of the new graphics cards RX 6950 XT, 6750 XT and 6650 XT, AMD released a driver version 22.10 that can control the current GPUs. The drivers contained in the AMD software Adrenalin 22.5.1 also offer innovations, but they only fix a display error with the transparency effects of Windows. These drivers are compatible with all Radeon GPUs up to the RX-400 series from 2016.
Drivers for current GPUs
At the same time, the ” AMD Software Preview Driver May 2022 ” should offer more innovations. In return, this is only suitable for graphics cards based on the RDNA or RDNA2 architecture. Accordingly, only cards from the RX-5000 and RX-6000 series are supported. However, AMD left open whether the drivers for older graphics cards should be discontinued in the medium term.
RSR and SAM
Among other things, the preview drivers contain a new slider for the sharpening effect of the upscaling function Radeon Super Resolution (RSR). In addition, the preview driver offers a performance increase of up to 10 percent compared to the generally valid driver. As a result, games like “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey” should increase the frame rate by 28 percent. “World of Warcraft: Shadowlands” should even run 30 percent better, while in “GTA 5” at least 11 percent higher frame rates can be expected. The growth in the titles “Far Cry 5”, “Watch Dogs Legion” or “The Witcher 3” is significantly lower at 3 to 10 percent. Thanks to the Smart Access Memory (SAM) function, the driver is said to accelerate titles such as “Death Stranding” and “Watch Dogs Legion” by an additional 6 to 13 percent.
