Apple TV is now available as an app for the new Google Chromecast with Google TV. Of course, it also includes access to the Apple TV + streaming service.
As confirmed today, the app for Apple TV that was already promised in 2020 is now also available for the Google Chromecast with Google TV. However, there is still no talk of regular Android TV without the Google TV interface. Obviously, you must first have a current generation Chromecast to use the app – or a TV set with Google TV. This of course also gives access to Apple’s in-house streaming service Apple TV +.
A subscription is of course still a requirement. The app will now be available for Google TV under the “Apps” area. The app for Apple TV not only gives you access to Apple TV +, but also to your films and series purchased from iTunes. You will also receive individualized recommendations within the application. In addition to the Chromecast with Google TV, the new TVs from Sony and TCL are now also supplied with the app for Apple TV.
The question remains: When is it the turn of devices with the regular Android TV – such as the Nvidia Shield TV (here our test)? This should be the case within the next few months. Unfortunately, one has not yet become more specific. Because devices with Google TV are currently more of a niche, because the surface will only be found on new TVs from 2021.
Google TV will probably replace Android TV
It looks like Google TV is supposed to replace Android TV as a brand. In the long term, all devices should use the new UI, which is more focused on content and recommendations. The name is a bit misleading, as Google worked with the “Google TV” brand many years ago. At that time, however, the current services of Google Play Films & Series ran under it.
