At Aldi: Is the gaming PC with RTX 3090 & 12900KF worth it for 3,799 euros?

Really good gaming performance from discounter Aldi? The Medion Erazer System Hunter X20 will be available from Aldi from April 28th and offers top equipment with Core i9-12900KF, RTX 3090 and 32 GB DDR5 RAM. We’ll tell you whether the PC is really worth its price of 3799 euros.

Aldi goes all out with the Hunter X20 system (on offer) and only installs high-end hardware in the gaming PC, such as an Intel Core i9-12900KF (to our test report), an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 (to our test report) and 32GB of DDR5 memory. As early as February of this year, Aldi offered a very similarly equipped gaming computer, the Medion Erazer X20 (to the article), but at the time for 3999 euros and with an Intel Core i9-12900K. We have checked for you whether the PC is worth its money. Even if graphics cards are still very expensive, 3799 euros are a lot of money for a finished computer. The Medion Erazer Hunter X20 (on sale) is

from April 28, 2022

in the joint online shop of Aldi Süd & Nord
Available from 7:00 a.m

Medion Erazer System Hunter X20 for 3,799 euros: configuration and assessment

  • Intel Core i9-12900K (3.2 to 5.2 GHz, 16 cores / 24 threads, 30 MB L3 cache)

  • Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 with 24GB GDDR6X video memory

  • 2TB PCIe SSD

  • 2TB HDD

  • 32GB DDR5 RAM (up to 4800MHz)

  • Alphacool Eisbaer 240 AiO water cooling with two In Win Saturn aRGB 120 mm fans

  • Seasonic Focus GX 750

  • In Win 103 housing with glass viewing window and illuminated front panel

  • Windows 11 Home

  • 3 year guarantee

With the Core i9-12900KF, Medion uses one of the fastest processors for gaming, as our CPU comparison (to the article) shows, and pairs it with the currently second fastest graphics card in our GPU comparison (to the article), the RTX 3090. Dem The processor is supported by 32 GB DDR5 RAM running at 4,800 MHz, the manufacturer is unfortunately not known. The mainboard Gigabyte Z690 Aorus Pro leaves nothing to be desired when it comes to equipment with a 17-phase power supply, the high-quality Realtek ALC4080 audio chip as well as Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2. There is also more than enough system memory with a 2 TB PCIe SSD and a 2 TB HDD. Unfortunately, Aldi does not reveal the exact product name again.

To keep the CPU cool, Medion installs the 240 mm AiO water cooling system Alphacool Eisbaer 240. The branded power supply unit Seasonic Focus GX750 is responsible for the power supply, which has an 80 PLUS Gold certification and modular cable management. Medion installed the hardware in “In Win 103” with a glass window and illuminated logo. Windows 11 is pre-installed in the Home version and Aldi grants a three-year guarantee.

We have reconfigured the Medion Erazer System Hunter X20 1:1 as far as possible (to the list) and come up with it

an individual component price of around 3500 euros

. The assembly, including a three-year guarantee, is paid handsomely by Aldi at around 300 euros – the gaming PC is therefore NOT a bargain. In addition, the Hunter X20 has one or two points of criticism or potential for optimization for self-construction:

We advise do-it-yourself builders to use DDR4 RAM instead of DDR5 RAM. Our comparison (to the article) has shown that DDR5 has only marginal performance advantages over DDR4 with high clock rates. In contrast, there is a huge difference in the acquisition costs, so 32 GB of DDR4 RAM with 3600 MHz only costs 32 GB

just under 150 euros (for price comparison)

for the same amount of DDR5 memory

at least 230 euros (for price comparison)

due, i.e. at least 80 euros more. As a result, you could use a motherboard with DDR4 RAM slots, which is also a bit cheaper.

You can save significantly more money with the graphics card. The RTX 3080 Ti in our test (read the article) is only slightly slower than the RTX 3090, currently costs in

price comparison

but a good 560 euros less. So if you don’t need the 24 GB of video memory of the RTX 3090 for creative applications, but just want to gamble with the PC, the RTX 3080 Ti is definitely the better choice. The power pack of the System Hunter X20, on the other hand, is quite tight at 750 watts. The RTX 3090 can sometimes require 450 to 500 watts alone at performance peaks. If you are planning to overclock the system, we would definitely recommend an 850 watt or larger PSU. With our alternative configuration (to the list) you could save almost 1000 euros compared to the Hunter X20 system with comparable gaming performance and have better overclocking possibilities.

Stay away from the Medion Erazer System Hunter X20. Do-it-yourselfers can be inspired by our alternative configuration (to the list). If you prefer to buy a ready-made PC, you can find it in the

Hyrican Horizon 6781 Gaming PC

(11900KF, RTX 3080 Ti, 32 GB RAM, 3000 GB SSD, water cooling, Windows 11) for 2999 euros a significantly cheaper alternative with comparable gaming performance.
