Athlete Mike Foppen saw an attack on the Dutch record 10 kilometers on the road fail in the New Year’s run in Madrid. The 24-year-old Gelderlander stayed a few seconds above the record that is held by Abdi Nageeye and Richard Douma with 28.08. Foppen, who took the Dutch titles on the track in the 5000 and 10,000 meters last summer, finished fourth in an unofficial time of 28.14.
In the sprint for third place, the resident of Nijmegen had to lose out to Kenyan American Paul Chelimo. The 25-year-old Kenyan Daniel Simiu Ebenyo soloed to victory in the Spanish capital. Ebenyo was the first to cross the finish line in 27.42.
Douma, who holds the Dutch record together with Nageeye, would also compete in Madrid. However, he was unable to fly to Spain due to problems with the necessary corona test. “Unfortunately I will not start during the San Silvestre Vallecana run in Madrid,” Douma wrote on Instagram on Thursday. “Afterwards it would have been more convenient to have a PCR test taken.”
