Aritz Aduriz, club icon of Athletic Bilbao, has ended his football career. The 39-year-old attacker came to more than 400 matches for the club. Aduriz had already said last year that the current season would be his last.
“Unfortunately, my body has said it’s enough. I can’t help my teammates the way I would like and deserve them. That’s how a pro lives,” Aduriz wrote in a statement.
A surgeon recently told Aduriz that the former international would do well to undergo major hip surgery.
Aduriz has been with Athletic since 2012, where he was also under contract early in his career. With the Basque club, he managed to qualify for the Copa del Rey final this season, but he also refrains from that final battle. Bilbao will compete against Real Sociedad. No new date has yet been set for that meeting.
