The fourth generation of the Audi RS 4, internally called the B9, has only been available as a station wagon since early 2018. Until recently, the main competitor of the fastest A4 Avant was the Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Estate, whose V8 biturbo developed up to 510 hp. However, with the model changeover to the 206 C-Class generation, the AMG version has been castrated from eight to four cylinders.
While it will probably be some time before the next C 63 is presented, the BMW M3 Touring is already in the starting blocks. And so that the RS 4 doesn’t look old, Audi came up with something after the facelift in spring 2020 to keep the RS 4 and the RS 5 (Coupé and Sportback), which have been available since 2017, fresh.
Audi RS 5 Coupé Competition Plus package

The two new equipment packages are available for the Audi RS 4 Avant as well as for the RS 5 Coupé and RS 5 Sportback.

From July 2022, the Ingolstadt company will be offering two new equipment packages for the RS 4 and RS 5. The most important information right away: Nothing changes in the performance of the 2.9-liter V6 biturbo. But it doesn’t matter, because with 450 hp and 600 Nm maximum torque, the RS models have not lacked in performance.

RS 4 and RS 5 are getting faster

Despite having the same performance, the RS 4 and RS 5 accelerate faster to 100 km/h than before with the new “competition package” costing 7875 euros. Audi claims to have measured the RS 4 Avant at 3.9 seconds (previously 4.1 seconds); RS 5 Coupé and Sportback should go to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds (previously 3.9 seconds).

The improvement was achieved through new software for the transmission control unit: it now gives the eight-speed automatic transmission faster shift times. In addition, the Vmax limit has been raised from 250 to 290 km/h (previously a maximum of 280 km/h in the RS dynamic package).

New coilover suspension

Anyone who invests another 4000 euros more for the new “competition package plus” also gets a revised sport differential with a more rear-heavy design and the “RS sport suspension pro”. This is a manually adjustable coilover kit with three-way adjustable dampers and stiffer stabilizers.

The RS 4 and RS 5 equipped in this way come from the factory with a ten millimeter lower ride height. A further ten millimeters lowering is possible on request.

In the interior there is plenty of Alcantara and red stitching for both models.

RS sports exhaust system pro for more sound

But that’s not all, because the competition package plus also includes the “RS sports exhaust system pro”, recognizable by the black tailpipes. The exhaust system should offer a sportier sound. The highlight: the sound was primarily achieved by reducing the insulation in the engine compartment. Incidentally, the new exhaust also saves eight kilos.
The new competition packages can be recognized from the outside by the fact that the RS 4 and RS 5 are equipped with the “black plus optics package” including black Audi rings as standard. Optics packages in matt or glossy carbon can be booked as an option. The Pirelli P-Zero Corsa sports tires and a new exterior paintwork in “Sebring Black Crystal Effect” are also available at extra cost.

The prices for the equipment packages

The competition package is available from 7875 euros, while the competition package plus costs 11,875 euros. In addition, there are the basic vehicles, which currently start at 86,000 euros (Audi RS 4 Avant) and 87,000 euros (Audi RS 5 Coupé).
