Austrian village Fucking then changes its name anyway

A village in Austria that had become the subject of countless internet jokes changes its name. Fucking becomes Fugging.

Every year hundreds, no thousands of tourists flow through the Austrian village of Fucking. With one goal: to take a photo under a municipality’s nameplate to score on social media. Hilarious everywhere, but the municipality is tired of it. The tourists bring little more than a burden.

From Focko to Fugging

People have lived in Fucking for about 1,000 years, that’s how old the name of the village is. Although the first inhabitants of Fucking may have known it with a slightly different emphasis. The founder of the hamlet in Austria is said to have been called Focko. The name Fuking already appears on a map from 1875.

But now the approximately 100 residents of Fucking have had enough. From 1 January 2021 you will therefore travel to Fugging. This is a temporary logistical nightmare for the municipality, but it should ultimately save costs. Tourists sometimes bring signage and that is quite expensive. The village has therefore already invested in heavily concreted signs, to no avail.

Bad Fucking

“I can confirm that the village will be renamed,” said Andrea Holzner, the mayor of Tarsdorf. That is the municipality to which the village belongs. “I don’t really want to say anything more about it, we have had enough media attention in the past”, the regional newspaper Oberösterreichische Nachrichten said.

The village in Bavaria became famous through a book by the Austrian Kurt Palm. A movie was made of it, Bad Fucking. On social media, the film got a tail in meme form. In a little while and that will be over.
