AUTO BILD SPORTSCARS 4/2022 – AUTO BILD

This winter I finally went skiing again. It was about time after a two-season corona break. Luckily, it’s like riding a bike – you don’t forget how to do it. Apparently, the situation is different when driving on our federal motorways. So on the way home I had a critical situation in which I was glad that the brake pads on our private diesel station wagon had just been replaced. I was driving at a leisurely 150 km/h in the middle lane, a truck on the right, and a B-Class behind me. The relaxation was over when the Mercedes driver suddenly pulled to the left without indicating. Right under my nose – in the wet at a speed difference of around 70 km/h.

After I had digested the first shock, I spontaneously had to think of some situations on the ski slope before. I was once drilled into it in a ski course: whoever crosses the slope looks up to see if a faster skier is coming. If you’re going fast, watch out for the beginners, because they don’t have eyes in the back of their heads and are busy with themselves. If everyone obeys these two rules, there are no avoidable collisions. I did the ski course in 1990 at the age of six – and have internalized the words to this day. Being considerate of one another, whether on skis or in a car, saves lives. Dear slow drivers: Please look behind you. You don’t have eyes in the back of your head. But you have mirrors.
