This is the third time that such a case has been officially reported worldwide since the start of the pandemic.

(AFP) – A baby was born infected with the new coronavirus carried by his mother, in the Russian Caucasus. Here is the announcement issued on Sunday by the country’s health authorities. “A pregnant woman was infected with the coronavirus, her baby was born infected,” a spokesperson for the regional health ministry told the official Russian news agency TASS. “They are currently at home, their condition is satisfactory,” he said.

A baby infected with Covid-19 was already born in mid-April in Peru, when the country’s health authorities said it was the “second case” of this type in the world.

In North Ossetia, the contaminated baby was born in a central hospital in Beslan where 17 out of 35 pregnant women hospitalized while awaiting delivery are infected with Covid-19, according to the head of the maternity ward, quoted by a chain of local television.

Today, Russia is at the second in the world, after the United States, for contamination by the coronavirus, with a total of 281,752 cases identified and 2,631 deaths.

Doubtful figures?

Critics have questioned the reality of the official death rate, accusing Russia of knowingly underestimating the death toll of the Covid-19. The authorities have rejected this thesis, specifying that only deaths whose primary cause is coronavirus are listed, while others account for almost all the deaths of patients tested positive.

The authorities also say that the epidemic having arrived later in Russia, they had time to prepare the hospitals and to put in place a massive policy of detection.
