Berta Benz’s great-granddaughter is happy about Mercedes-Benz instead of Daimler

Daimler AG is split into two independent companies: one for trucks and commercial vehicles and one for passenger cars – the future Mercedes-Benz AG, reports the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Jutta Benz, great-granddaughter of Carl and Bertha Benz, is happy about this split. And above all because of her great-grandmother Bertha. It was Bertha Benz who made the development of automobile construction possible with her financial resources. Because Bertha Benz had her dowry paid out early in order to support her fiancé Carl financially with his invention, reports the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”.

The way back to Mercedes-Benz was not an easy one

In the course of the split, the passenger car division will now be called Mercedes-Benz. An amusing development for Jutta Benz. After all, her great-grandfather wanted to build trucks, she told the FAZ. For Carl Benz, the main purpose of a car was transportation.

The way back to the name Mercedes-Benz was not an easy one. Jutta Benz first appeared publicly in 2007 when the carmaker was looking for a new name after the end of the failed collaboration with the American carmaker Chrysler. Jutta Benz had previously bought a share in order to be able to vote at the shareholders’ meeting, reports the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”. She also talked for a long time with Dieter Zetsche, the then Daimler boss.

In addition, the employees in Mannheim demonstrated with exclamations such as “There is no Daimler without Benz”. But none of that was of any use: the extraordinary general meeting rejected the family’s proposal to return to the old “Daimler-Benz” and at that time only voted for Daimler.

Skepticism towards electric cars

Jutta Benz has been a “brand ambassador” in the company since 2007. You have a “fresh and gripping way”, the group describes it to the “FAZ”. It is now stored in the vintage department, “in the museum”, she told the “FAZ”.

Jutta Benz is skeptical about the development of electric mobility. And above all for very practical reasons. She would also drive an electric car herself, she told the FAZ, “if I knew that I didn’t have to plug in every hundred kilometers”. Electric cars are a good thing. However, Jutta Benz finds it wrong that the state wants to ban cars with internal combustion engines in the long term. In her private life, however, Carl Benz’s great-granddaughter rides a bicycle most of the time. Since October she has only covered 700 kilometers in her own Mercedes-Benz.
