Last year, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates answered a variety of questions in an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit, ranging from topics such as climate change to the future of education.

About 30 minutes into the live session, the questions for Bill Gates began to focus on his personal life. Gates, 63 years old at the time, was asked two exciting questions: “Are you happy?” And shortly afterwards: “What actually makes you happy?”

The second richest man in the world answered the first question: “Yes! In my 30s, I didn’t think that people over 60 were very smart or having a lot of fun. In the meantime, the opposite has been found. Ask me in 20 years and I’ll tell you how smart 80-year-olds are ”.

Regarding the second question, Gates said, “Some people say that it is very special when your children are doing well, and as a parent, I totally agree. Sometimes it also makes you happier if you fulfill obligations and promises to others, but also to yourself and, for example, move more.

It’s interesting how Gates understanding of happiness changed in his 60s compared to his 20s or 30s. At 30, it was undoubtedly “fun” from a business perspective to advance Microsoft’s original mission of “bringing a computer to every desk and household”.

But this mission was fulfilled, at least in industrial society. Since then, things have changed for Gates. In a 2017 Facebook post, he wrote, “In my 20s and early 30s, I was a software fanatic. I didn’t take vacations or weekends off, and I wasn’t interested in getting married. That obviously changed when I met Melinda! “

Today he enjoys the fruits of his labor as part of his family and personal ambitions. And with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, he is trying to realize his vision for the future: to end extreme poverty and hunger in the world.

You may think now, “I’m not Bill Gates: I don’t enjoy the same luxuries in my life.” You don’t have to be a billionaire to be happy. Based on his revelations about happiness, read here how you too can achieve the same level of happiness as Gates.
