It’s that time again: In many places, the police are increasingly on the hunt for speed offenders. The event is now officially called the “Speedmarathon”, but it is probably known and feared by most drivers as the speed camera marathon. AUTO BILD answers the most important questions:

The increased controls will take place in some federal states on March 24, 2022, in some all week. The campaign usually lasts 24 hours. The checks start either at midnight or at 6 a.m. In some countries (e.g. Hesse) there is only increased flashing until 10 p.m. of the same day. The last additional measuring points in the participating federal states will be dismantled by March 25th, also at 6 a.m. at the latest.

Which states participate

While the big Blitzmarathon 2020 was completely canceled due to the corona virus and the campaign only took place in four out of 16 federal states last year, more states will take part again in 2022.

Baden-Württemberg: take part!

The controls start on March 24th at midnight, the campaign lasts 24 hours.

Bavaria: take part!

Bavaria takes part in the Blitzermarathon. The controls start on March 24th at 6 a.m., the campaign lasts 24 hours. The authorities are even kind enough to provide online information about the individual measuring points.

Berlin: no participation!

A spokesman for AUTO BILD: “The Berlin police are not taking part in the so-called speed camera marathon, as it has been shown that the low level of sustainability of this action does not justify the high level of effort required. We monitor speed all year round with everything we have at our disposal standing funds.”

Brandenburg: take part!

There will be more flashes on March 24 from midnight to midnight. The following measuring points were announced in advance:

A police spokesman told AUTO BILD on March 22: “Yesterday began a focus week on the subject of speed enforcement, coordinated by the network of European traffic police ROADPOL. This will be accompanied by a so-called speed marathon tomorrow, in which we, the Hamburg police, will of course also take part participate in a concerted effort.”

Hesse: take part!

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: take part!

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will take action against speeders on Thursday (March 24). The Ministry of the Interior announced that the entire March was dedicated to combating the cause of the accident “speed”. Therefore, the state police carry out themed traffic controls throughout the month. However, neither checkpoints nor the number of police officers deployed are announced.

Lower Saxony: does not really take part!

A police spokeswoman told AUTO BILD: “The current calendar week is also under the motto ‘Speed’ in Lower Saxony – and in this context a so-called speed marathon was suggested for March 24th. However, the Lower Saxony police are not involved in the speed marathon itself.”

North Rhine-Westphalia: does not participate!

The NRW police do not take part in the speed camera marathon.

Rhineland-Palatinate: take part!

From March 21 to 27, 2022, the Rheinpfalz police headquarters will be taking part in the Europe-wide speed control week. In addition, it also takes part in the speed marathon and will carry out more speed checks on Thursday (March 24).

A spokesman for the Saxony police told AUTO BILD: “The Saxony police are currently also taking part in the Speed Campaign Week. “We don’t reveal where the speed cameras are. There are people who drive fast as a habit, we don’t want to warn them in advance. Everyone should expect that there could be a speed camera on every corner,” said Matthias Felsch, spokesman for the Schleswig-Holstein state police .
