Sporty, dynamic and available with over 300 hp – with these attributes you didn’t think of the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer? To be honest, neither do we, but with the second generation, the most practical of all Munich residents is exactly that! BMW would like to bring the black sheep of the product range, for die-hard fans, closer to the brand essence in the future and is putting a lot of work into the family van to achieve this.

Market launch and price: plug-in hybrids will come later

Connectivity and iDrive: New “MyModes” combine driving modes and ambient control

BMW is donating the latest iDrive including Operating System 8 to the new 2 Series Active Tourer iX The operating system introduced is now also incorporated into a vehicle with a combustion engine. Unlike in the middle and upper class, BMW does without the popular iDrive controller in the family van. The system is operated here by touch or voice input. With the new infotainment system, the climate controls also move to the 10.7-inch central display. With the new “MyModes”, different theme worlds can be called up here. The modes basically replace the previous choice of classic driving modes, but control the ambience as well as the vehicle properties. BMW Maps is always standard and relies on cloud-based route guidance. 5G connectivity ensures fast data exchange with the BMW servers and other BMWs on the road. With the help of the new mobile radio technology, the Active Tourer will be fit for the coming decade.

Drives: Plug-in hybrids have a range of up to 80 kilometers

As far as the drives are concerned, BMW relies on it classic combustion engines and two plug-in hybrids. In addition, thanks to 48-volt technology and a starter generator integrated in the gearbox, most of the petrol and diesel units become mild hybrids. The power range extends from 136 hp in the 218i (three-cylinder) to 218 hp in the 223i (four-cylinder), the only diesel remains the 150 hp 218d (Four-cylinder), a new seven-speed double clutch is standard on all 2 Series Active Tourers. All-wheel drive models will be followed by the Munich-based company later. The two plug-in hybrids will go on sale from summer 2022 with a 14.9 kWh battery and thus with an electric range of up to 80 km. Thanks to the electric motor on the rear axle, they are always equipped with xDrive. The charging power has been increased from 3.4 kW to 7.4 kW, which should ensure a full battery after just 2.5 hours. The entry-level model here is the 225e with a system output of 245 hp, above that is the top model 230e with 326 hp.

Among the combustion engines, the petrol engines produce 136 to 218 hp, the only diesel available is the 150 hp 218d.
