BMW M 3.0 CSL Homage: Does the new edition cost 600,000 euros?

So is he coming now? Back in 2015, as part of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, BMW presented the 3.0 CSL Hommage, a concept car that was as spectacular as it was beautiful. The study reverently quoted the original introduced in 1971 – right down to the color “golf yellow” (color code 070). To this day, the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage is an eye-catcher; however, it was said at the time that it would not go into series production. Seven years later, BMW has obviously changed its mind!

Because it seems as if a new edition of the 3.0 CSL, the last expansion stage of which is affectionately called “Batmobile” by fans because of the huge wing, is actually coming. On his private Instagram account, BMW M boss Franciscus van Meel has posted three pictures of a coupe that is still camouflaged and that has many design influences from the 3.0 CSL.
And the occasion fits too: After all, M GmbH is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. And what better way to celebrate than with the rebirth of an icon?

The BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage study presented in 2015 is still an eye-catcher today.

Even if the rumors about a new edition are not entirely new, the speculation was fueled again directly by the Instagram post. But let’s stick to the facts for now. In the pictures we see a camouflaged coupe – despite the eye-catching foil, however, interesting design details can be seen.

The eye-catcher at the front are the kidneys. Compared to the current M3/M4, they have been redesigned, are shorter and have new black inserts. Scoffers would say the kidneys have been defused.

Round air inlets can be seen on the bottom left and right of the apron – a crystal-clear reminiscence of the original.

Roof edge spoiler like the original

The same goes for the rear. The eye-catching roof edge spoiler quotes the Batmobile, as does the large, fixed rear wing. If you look closely, you can also see the wide wheel arches.

The rear wing and roof edge spoiler are particularly striking. The extensions are only noticeable at second glance.

So much for the facts. It is more than likely that the 3.0 CSL is based on the BMW M4 CSL, which has just been shown and is limited to 1000 units. However, it is probably more than an even more refined M4 CSL.

The homage should only take the basis of the 550 hp special model and have a completely new body – quasi coachbuilding by BMW.

How much horsepower does the new edition have?

There is no reliable information about the drive yet. But it would be more than surprising if the new small-series model did not rely on the three-liter straight-six with the abbreviation S58. Insiders speak of up to 600 hp and a top speed of 320 km/h.

Six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic?

It becomes particularly interesting when it comes to the choice of gearbox. It would be obvious that BMW uses the proven eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF. But there are also interesting rumors on this point: They say that BMW is launching the new edition exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission.

This thesis is supported by a sticker on the rear of the camouflaged prototype. It says: “6MT FTW” – i.e. “6 manual transmission for the win”.

The BMW M 3.0 CSL is said to be produced in a small series of just 50 units from November 2022. Unit price: around 600,000 euros! There are not only almost four M4 CSL, but also the “Batmobile”. But the two models should already be in the garage of most potential customers anyway.
