BMW X1/iX1 (2022): Compact SUV for the first time also as an electric car

Presentation and design: New X1 is significantly beefy

The beefy front with the almost square kidneys characterize the X1. Overall, the SUV is 44 millimeters higher.
The front apron is adorned with design elements which, depending on the equipment, are available in a brushed aluminum look or in black. A powerdome-like elevation on the hood gives the X1 a little more presence. The new X1 is based on 17-inch rims, the “xLine” and “M Sport” even get 18-inch models. If that’s not enough, you can optionally get up to 20 inches.
iX1 stands out optically only slightly from the combustion engine
The elongated roof line, including the roof edge spoiler that protrudes far, emphasizes the stretched side line of the X1. And as is typical for SUVs, it also continues at the rear: decorative elements on the flat rear window are intended to guide the air past the X1 in a favorable manner. The whole thing is supported by the far-reaching rear lights.

Rear lights that protrude far, a long roof edge spoiler and design elements at the rear are intended to improve the aerodynamics of the X1.
The electric version of the SUV differs only slightly from their combustion engine colleagues. The most striking change is likely to be the decorative elements in blue. Unlike the petrol and diesel engines, the radiator grille with the large kidneys remains closed.
Dimensions: The X1 grows in all directions
In terms of dimensions, the third generation of the X1 has grown in all directions. At 4.5 meters, the little Bavarian is 53 millimeters longer than its predecessor, and at almost 1.85 meters wide, it is also 24 millimeters wider. The height of the new X1 has increased by a total of 44 millimeters and now measures a total of 1.64 meters.

Surprisingly spacious for a small SUV: Even taller passengers have enough space in the rear.
If you opt for one of the all-wheel drive variants, however, you have to make compromises when it comes to storage space. Here the customers have to come to terms with 500 to 1545 liters. With the plug-in hybrids and the fully electric iX1, 490 to 1495 liters still fit in. If that is not enough, you can order an optional trailer hitch, then the X1 can pull up to 1200 kilograms on the hook.
Dimensions at a glance:
• Width: 1845mm
• Height: 1642mm
• Wheelbase: 2692mm
• Trunk volume: 540-1600 liters (500-1545 liters with all-wheel drive)
• Trunk volume iX1 and plug-in hybrid: 490-1495 liters
Interior: Curved display and OS 8 as standard in the X1
Comfortable seats and enough space for passengers
The freely floating center console offers a good armrest and sufficient storage space. Inductive charging and a standard Bluetooth interface are just as much a part of the equipment as the sports leather steering wheel that is already installed in the base.

Interior with few buttons and standard curved display. BMW’s new OS 8 is of course on board.
The new seats in the X1 should ensure appropriate comfort, the optional seating offers good lateral support even when stationary. The rear seat bench is variably adjustable and can be folded down in a 40:20:40 ratio to increase the load space. The space is also pleasant, even taller people have enough headroom and legroom.
