BMW X4: This is how the SUV performs in the used car test!

Luxury with a sense of proportion: the X4 is a BMW for climbers

Expensive and impractical or just perfect? One can argue about the BMW X4 – not about its quality. The SUV in the used car test!

D.he BMW X4 was presented in 2014 as a coupé-like offshoot of the X3. Pretty, but impractical and expensive. No shortcoming for the customers who like to access. Knowing well, for their money, to get the extra portion of image that the brave one gives them X3 denied. A socially responsible statement. Quite different from the big brother X6, whose appearance has long been too showy for many.

All-wheel drive and automatic always standard on the BMW X4

According to the self-confident positioning of the intern F26 mentioned X4 The engine selection was also canceled. Right from the start, customers could choose between Gasoline engines with achievements between 184 and 306 PS choose that Diesel engines deliver 190 to 313 PS. All-wheel drive is always standard, as well as the much-praised ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, which with its smooth gear changes and high reliability still plays every double clutch transmission against the wall.

A classic six-speed manual gearbox was only available with the basic diesel, the 20d, available, but was almost never ordered. With the two additional speed levels, the machines turn lower, always have the right gear ready and also harmonize better overall with the vehicle class. Anyone who is toying with a switch should be prepared for a long bond, as the sale will be difficult later.

Our test BMW X4 still sounds dewy after 156,000 km

Likewise The small petrol engines are only partially recommendable 20i and 28i. The performance is okay, the somewhat uncouth run of the N20Engines, known from BMW 1 Series and 3 Series, do not seem quite befitting here either. The combination of the highest level of driving culture coupled with even higher costs is what the 306 delivers PS Strength 35i as well as the one postponed in 2015 M40i with a superior 360 hp. It is hardly slower, but it is significantly more economical 35d with 313 hp power diesel. We opt for the golden mean, the 30d with 258 PS. Even after more than 156,000 kilometers, it still sounds dewy in our test car from the dealership in Bockel, nails very fine and free of background noises. If need be, the three-liter whips the 1.8-tonX4 in less than six seconds to Tacho 100, can also be used with seven liters in everyday life without any problems. Horse owners can look forward to a trailer load of 2.4 tons.

Problems are rare with the BMW X4

Basically The balance of defects is positive of X4. Apart from, depending on the driving style and mileage, axle suspensions, shock absorbers and springs that are pushed to their limits, there are problems with the X4 Rare. As is usual with SUVs, the brake wear is a bit higher, the navigation system is sometimes in a bad mood and hangs up. Little things. The interior, across from that X3 significantly upgraded, still convinces after five years good quality and little wear and tear. That a xenon burner gave up on the test car – for free. Also the chain problems with the four-cylinder BMW have followed many years, let the X4 cold. They no longer affect the built-in one B47-Diesel, but the predecessor N47. More problematic, but unfortunately common, are particle filters that are too much Short-haul use can close. Especially the big six-cylinder should run longer under load every now and then so that they feel comfortable and run properly.

Follow-up costs must be taken into account for the BMW X4

The range of used X4s starts at around 20,000 euros, decent vehicles easily climb to over 25,000 euros, but are very stable in value. Provided that the equipment is right. The small Navi Business installed – as in the test car – is a compromise, the large Professional is better. E-seats, distance radar, LED lights and towbars are also in demand in this class. Even if one of those X4 as the used vehicle becomes affordable, they remain high follow-up costs. A decent set of complete winter wheels always costs four digits due to the dimensions, the insurance classifications (here is the car insurance comparison) are uncomfortable and only reasonable with a large no-claims discount. Over 400 euros in taxes for the 30d are also an announcement. And apply to repairs BMW-Workshops not as discount stores. Anyone who thinks about all of this and dares the small ascent, has with the X4 have fun.

Conclusion: Chic coupé shape, paired with practical talents and a high seating position. For many it is BMW X4 a dream car that offers luxury with a sense of proportion. It is also technically convincing. Unfortunately, this is reflected in high used prices. (More on the topic: BMW X4 – News, Tests and Videos)
