Motorsport: Sports Tribunal CAS suspends motorcycle racer Iannone for four years
13.03 hours: Italian motorcycle racer Andrea Iannone has been suspended for four years by the international sports tribunal CAS for doping. The penalty is much more severe than the 18 months imposed on him by the international motorsport federation FIM.
Iannone was caught using a banned anabolic steroid at the Malaysian Grand Prix last November. The FIM imposed a suspension on him in March 2020. The Italian (31) has been racing in MotoGP since 2013. He had his only victory on a Ducati in 2016.
Iannone appealed his suspension to the court of sports arbitration CAS. The road racer claimed to be innocent and said the positive test was the result of eating contaminated meat. At the CAS Iannone could not prove this, after which the tribunal ruled that the violation of the doping rules must be considered deliberate. The suspension of four years is in accordance with the wishes of the global anti-doping agency WADA.
The suspension will take effect retroactively from December 17, 2019. He will not be eligible to start again until December 2023. Iannone announced on Instagram that he does not accept the severe punishment. “This is the worst injustice I could have ever imagined. They tore my heart from the greatest love in my life. I will keep fighting to clear my name, ”he wrote on Instagram.
Iannone’s long suspension will free up a spot on Aprilia’s factory team in MotoGP next season. Briton Cal Crutchlow is named as the successor. This season, the Briton replaces Bradley Smith for Iannone at Aprilia.

“The circumstances have not really helped, but in this way going further offered too little perspective”, the club management said on the website. “Of course it is never nice to have to make such a decision. We started the season together with the intention of making something beautiful out of it. Harry himself had a major say in the composition of the selection and saw potential in his player group. For whatever reason, it won’t come out. Then the moment comes when you have to make a decision, ”explains Managing Director Hans de Zeeuw.
Nothing is yet known about the succession of Van den Ham. The available assistants will do the honors for the time being.
