In Bucharest, three group matches and an eighth final were scheduled when the European Championship was held this summer. However, the European title fight has been postponed to the summer of 2021, due to the corona virus.
In principle, UEFA wants to finish the final round next year in the same twelve cities. However, the European Union must make new agreements with the authorities in all countries.
“In principle, we want to hold the European Championship in twelve cities. But if that doesn’t work, we are willing to do it in ten, nine or even eight,” said UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin last week. “There are some problems with three cities, we are still discussing that.”
With the Johan Cruijff ArenA, Amsterdam also wants to host the European Championship again. However, all agreements have yet to be put on paper. Bilbao and Rome, among others, are known to have doubts about housing the European Championship in 2021.
UEFA hopes to have an agreement with all twelve host cities before 17 June. Partly for this reason, a board meeting that was scheduled for May 27 was postponed for about three weeks.
