As the first top football league in Europe, the Bundesliga continued to operate in the corona pandemic. This weekend will be played again. Negotiations on the allocation of television rights between the DFL and various media companies continue in the background.

And Amazon could play a bigger role than previously known. According to a report by the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”, the tech group is also said to have expressed interest in the coming season. According to information from the media magazine “DWDL”, Amazon has now acquired the rights for the remaining games of the streaming service Dazn and will transmit them at the same time. Specifically, it is about the games on Friday at 8:30 p.m., Sunday 1:30 p.m., Monday 8:30 p.m. and two games in the English Week. Interesting: The four relegation games for the first and second Bundesliga are also broadcast on Amazon. Originally, Dazn also held the exclusive rights here. Saturday and most Sunday games are left to Sky – as are the last two matchdays, which traditionally take place on Saturday.

Amazon shows serious interest in football

This Wednesday, the streaming provider shows the 18:30 game between RB Leipzig and Hertha BSC. A total of seven games plus the relegation games will be broadcast on Amazon this season.

Amazon is thus a serious competition for the previous providers. The move was made possible by the Corona crisis, which upset the contracts between the DFL and its media partner Discovery, which ran until 2021. Discovery has previously passed the license on to Dazn through its subsidiary Eurosport, but apparently did not pay the next installment due to the interruption of the Bundesliga season. The media rights for the next season package 2021 to 2025, which was originally scheduled, are still pending. Between June 8th and 19th, it should now be decided who will receive the broadcasting rights for which games in this season.

Amazon took advantage of the gap. The interest in the Bundesliga beyond the current season shows a serious commitment of the American tech group to football. From the 2021/22 season, Amazon has already secured the rights to broadcast some Uefa Champions League games. Now the financially strong company could also become a player in the Bundesliga. Because unlike the competition, Amazon has even benefited from the corona crisis.
