Bürstner Campeo C 540 4×4: Camping on all roads

After all, many attractive destinations are not at the end of a road, but require a little more effort to reach them. And, as has been shown again and again, all-wheel drive helps enormously.

We’re not talking about desert expeditions or rainforest tours. The real adventures are much closer, a wet meadow in the Harz mountains, the beach of a quarry pond or a freshly snowed-in parking space when it comes to cross-country skiing.

And we’re talking about everyday life, in which the vehicle, which shouldn’t be too bulky if possible, should also fit in: that’s exactly what Bürstner had in mind, a crossover of the typical cosiness, which is always top priority at Kehlern, and an off-road capable van.

Comfortable: Inside, the Campeo 4×4 has the typical Bürstner look.

This is the Campeo 4×4

In principle, the four-wheel drive can not surprise. Bürstner uses the Campeo, which has been in production since 2019, as a basis, and it makes sense to use the short version with an external length of only 5.41 meters.

For the chassis, Bürstner does not use the Fiat Ducato, but rather the Citroën Jumper with factory all-wheel drive preparation. In turn, the Alsatian specialist Dangel equips it with a drive train for the rear axle including a viscous coupling.

Also included: an electronic traction system for all wheels, which communicates directly with the ESP. Dangel developed this solution together with Bosch.

The Campeo 4×4 has that

The Campeo 4×4 is based on a classic van layout. Everything is tailored to the compact exterior dimensions: you sleep crossways in the rear, on two cold foam mattresses and slatted frames that can be folded up to create a lavish cargo space – big enough for two bicycles, which of course have to be parked outside at the destination if you sleep in the car target.

It appears short and to the point, also available in an off-road look for an extra charge: the Campeo 4×4 is ready for adventure.

The mini bathroom offers the complete program with shower and toilet, Bürstner even found space for a small window. The kitchen opposite is limited to two hotplates and a compressor refrigerator, the door of which opens on both sides and can therefore also be used from the outside.

But it only holds 62 liters – compact, like all storage spaces in the Campeo. However, it is positive that Bürstner does not obstruct the view to the rear with high furniture: this visual axis gives the interior of the Campeo a touch of generosity.

The four-wheel drive and the optional lock can be switched on easily at the push of a button.

Bürstner also offers this when it comes to furniture decor: there are at least four consistently tasteful variants to choose from for the Campeo 4×4 – at no extra charge. This only applies to very few wishes here.

This is how the Campeo drives

In everyday life, the Jumper is on the road in 4×2 mode, so it doesn’t differ from the standard model. At the simple push of a button – the buttons are located to the left of the steering wheel, below the switch for fog lights and the headlight range control – the rear axle switches on without any spectacle.

A red button is available as an option: it can be used to lock the rear axle. This function is part of the off-road package (5478 euros), which also includes a chic and practical suspension kit (front 22, rear 60 millimeters), matt black wheel arch extensions and last but not least the distinctive, deep-treaded BF Goodrich All Terrain tires.

From the rear, the all-wheel drive remains rather discreet: there is no clear indication of the extra.

It’s impressive, and it should also bring a big plus in the field – which we still have to check in hard use.
The handiness of a motorhome that is only 5.40 meters long is always impressive.

In cities, it can be parked in the same way as any car, plus the priceless plus of being able to make good progress even on winding paths.

The 120 hp of the basic version are sufficient if a high travel speed is not so important – if only because of the tires. 140 hp (1089 euros) and 165 hp (2409 euros) are available on request.
