The festival, which normally takes place in mid-May, had previously expressed the hope of organizing something more in the summer. “But it is very clear that Cannes 2020 will not continue in its original form,” the organization agrees.
Nevertheless, the festival wants to try whether the prestigious film event can take place in a different form. The organization does not provide any further explanation on Tuesday about what that form entails. “We have started discussions with professionals in and outside France,” the statement read. “The Cannes festival is an important pillar for the international film industry. We are exploring all possibilities to be that pillar in a different form, also this year. ”
It is unclear when Cannes will further explain the plans. Festival director Thierry Fremaux previously hinted that Benedetta, the new film by the Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, was almost certainly included in the selection. Earlier, the filmmaker also Basic Instinct and Elle selected.
