This is reported by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) this morning. In the past three months, the average number of people in work has increased by 33,000 per month. Over the same period, the number of unemployed fell by an average of 3000 per month.
Unemployment rate higher
Between July and August, the unemployment rate did increase slightly, from 3.1 to 3.2 percent. That equates to 301,000 unemployed. An increase in the summer months is not unusual because temporary contracts in, for example, education expire and fewer people are actively looking for work due to holidays.
In August, 4 million people aged 15 to 75 were without paid work for various reasons. In addition to the unemployed, there were 3.7 million people who have not actively looked for work recently or who are not immediately available for work. According to the CBS, this group is not included in the working population.
The number belonging to this group has decreased by an average of 32,000 per month in recent months. The number of people who were available for work again rose faster than the number of employed and unemployed people who withdrew from the labor market.
Fewer unemployment benefits
At the end of August, the UWV provided 212,700 unemployment benefits. That is 11,600 fewer than at the end of June. According to Statistics Netherlands, it is customary for fewer unemployment benefits to be paid in the summer months. The relaxation of the contact-limiting measures and the favorable economic situation probably also play a role.
Due to the high demand for personnel, the shortage on the labor market is increasing. The UWV sees shortages to a greater or lesser extent for 67 professional groups. Of these, 30 professional groups have a ‘very tight’ labor market. There are many job opportunities as a welder and sheet metal worker, assembly worker, transport planner and nurse.
The number of benefits for catering staff fell the most. The number of unemployment benefits is only increasing in education. The latter is common for the summer months. Temporary contracts are often terminated at the end of the school year.
