Change hard drive symbols in Windows Explorer – PC WORLD

Explorer marks each drive with a standard symbol. However, it doesn’t have to stay that way, you can also swap the icons as you like and even use your own image for each drive. Only a few additions to the registry are required for this.

First get a suitable icon, preferably in the “ICO” file format. Just search for “harddisk ico” in Google or go to specific sites such as https://iconarchive.com or https://de.findicons.com.

The symbols of the individual drives in Explorer can easily be replaced by other motifs. There is a large selection of suitable ICO files on the Internet.

Then type regedit in the search field on the taskbar and click on the hit “Registry Editor”. Now shimmy through to the folder “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFT WARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer DriveIcons”. Right-click in the right half of the window and then select “New -› Key “.

Give the new entry the name of the hard disk drive whose icon you want to change, for example “C:”. Next, create another key in this key using “New -> Key” and name it “DefaultIcon”. The editor then creates the value “(Standard)” in it, as in every key. Double-click this value, enter the path to your icon file in the following window and confirm with “OK”. To change the icon of another drive, create your own key and subkey just like for drive C :.
