Chinese street style goes viral on TikTok, but here’s why it can be dangerous

If you are regularly on TikTok, then you have probably already seen them, the ridiculously stylish Chinese parading through the street. They are extremely popular for their striking style, but they can also be dangerous.

The latest hype on TikTok is #chinesestreetfashion. And it is simply what it says: Chinese and their impeccable sense of style. The videos are (rightly) extremely popular, but can also be harmful.

Chinese street fashion

The TikToks under the hashtag #chinesestreetfashion look more like a catwalk than a regular street. But this is indeed how the Chinese really walk on the street. Still, there is a reason why they are all so stylish. The videos were made in popular fashion districts.

These include the Taikoo Li neighborhoods in Chengdu, Beijing Sanlitun in Beijing and Xintiandi in Shanghai. Many of the people in the TikToks also know that these are neighborhoods where they can be filmed and therefore they dress extra fashionable.

This is what it looks like on the other side of the stylish Chinese:

Because there is always filming in the same neighborhoods, there are also certain influencers who regularly appear in the compilations on TikTok.

These are the most popular influencers of the moment:

Edited images

The Chinese in the videos are not only super stylish, they are all long and narrow. But they are not as long and narrow as they appear in the videos. The videos are edited to give them longer legs.

In this way, the videos contribute to an unrealistic body image and can encourage the (often young) users of TikTok to diet strongly to pursue such an unrealistic body.

Elly.xia, one of the popular # Chinesestreetfashion profiles, explains that filters are indeed used:
