If you want to plan your vacation now, you should take a look at the public holidays beforehand – because you can even double your free time with a few bridging days. Although around half of all public holidays in 2021 fall on a weekend, there are still some ways to have a lot of free time in a row for just a few vacation days!

New year and three kings

The first of January is a Friday this year, which means we are starting the new year with a long weekend. If you want to relax a little longer from the New Year’s Eve party, you can take the first week (five days off) and get ten days off in a row.

If you come from Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and Saxony-Anhalt, you only have to take four instead of five vacation days. Because on Wednesday, January 6th, there is the holiday of the Three Kings.

Easter

Over the Easter holidays you can even get 16 days off with eight vacation days. Good Friday falls on April 2nd in 2021, and Easter Monday on April 5th. If you hand in vacation four days before and four days after, you will have free from March 27th to April 11th.

If that is too long for you, you can just take vacation the week after Easter Monday, so with four vacation days you have ten days off in a row.

Ascension Day and Pentecost

May 13th is Ascension Day, a Thursday. So you can take one day off for a four-day weekend or take the whole week off so that you have eleven days off at a time.

If you take a vacation after Whit Monday on May 24th, you have a total of nine days off. If you need an extra long break, you can still take time off in the week between Ascension Day and Pentecost. So you would have 13 days off from May 8th to May 30th.

Corpus Christi

If you come from Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland or certain parts of Saxony and Thuringia, you can use a bridge day for a long weekend after Thursday, June 3rd.

If you submit a vacation from May 14th to June 4th, you can enjoy 25 days of free time with just 14 vacation days invested.

All Saints Day

Unfortunately, things don’t look so good for employees in autumn. Assumption Day, German Unity Day and Reformation Day each fall on a Sunday.

People from Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland have a long weekend on All Saints’ Day on November 1st, a Monday. If you also take the four days off afterwards, it can turn into a nine-day vacation.

In Saxony you can use the Day of Repentance and Prayer on November 17th with the help of bridging days for a long weekend, in Thuringia World Children’s Day on September 20th. And: Berliners have time off on March 8, International Women’s Day. This is a Monday, and therefore suitable for a long weekend.
