Colruyt itself says that its “non-food web store” Collishop is one of the largest Belgian web shops, but that it is closing the web store anyway because in the current competitive landscape “specialization is required in online non-food sales”.
Dieter Struyve of Colruyt: “We have a number of categories that we managed in the past, but now we make very conscious choices about them.” In the segment of online sales of non-food products, Collishop had a strong competitor to the international Amazon platform and the Dutch mastodon bol.com, part of Ahold Delhaize.
Collishop had been around since 1983, but still had to compete with the scale of younger competitors Amazon and bol.com. In addition, Collishop never really became a name, says marketing expert Els Bruegelmans of KU Leuven: “At some point in the beginning, they may have missed an opportunity to make their name very well known. If you now ask on the street: do you know Collishop, then? a smaller group of people will say yes, compared to: do you know bol.com or Amazon. “
