Do you want to connect all devices in the home network to the VPN server without additional software? We’ll show you how it’s done.
Connect the entire home network with a VPN service
You use a VPN tool from Cyberghost or Express-VPN for your Windows PC to connect to the corresponding VPN service. You would like to do this with all devices in your home network: Installing the right VPN app on each one is too time-consuming, however. Instead, consider whether there is a way to connect the entire home network to the VPN via your router, a Fritzbox. Then devices such as a smart TV could also use VPN for which there is no suitable app. However, this connection does not work with a Fritzbox.
Cyberghost VPN from 2.75 euros per month
You can couple Fritzbox home networks with each other via VPN so that one Fritzbox works as a VPN server and the other as a VPN client. To do this, however, you have to select the VPN settings and protocols that the Fritzbox specifies. However, the VPN services use other methods, for example Open VPN, which the Fritzbox does not support.

The Fritzbox forwards VPN data packets so that they get to the corresponding VPN service. The secure connection exists here between the VPN tool on a device in the Fritzbox home network and the VPN server of the service provider, but not between the Fritzbox as home network router and the VPN service.
Unlimited streaming with Express VPN
Certain WLAN routers such as the Asus RT-AC88U can connect the entire home network with a VPN service. This is not possible with a Fritzbox.
If you want to connect all devices in the home network to the VPN server without additional software, you need a WLAN router that can be used as a VPN client. Some VPN providers sell suitable routers with an alternative firmware that allows use as a VPN client, or offer a corresponding firmware for download, which you then import onto the router yourself. But you can also import an alternative firmware such as DD-WRT, provided your router supports it: It contains functions with which the router becomes a VPN client for the Open VPN protocol, which is often used by VPN services. But there are also router models that support Open-VPN ex works – for example many Asus products such as the RT-AC68U or the RTAC88U. You then activate the VPN client function in the router settings and all you need is the appropriate configuration file for the desired VPN service, which you can get from its support website.
