Corona figures: After a long increase in the number of infections

The number of coronavirus infections in our country is increasing again. In addition, the positivity ratio rises again to 6 percent. The number of hospital admissions remains exactly the same and the number of deaths is still visible.

In the latest figures on the Sciensano dashboard, we see that the number of new coronavirus infections is rising again slightly. The positivity ratio is also increasing. Meanwhile, the number of hospital admissions in our country is stagnating. The number of deaths is still decreasing.

Average of 2,005.9 new infections per day (+5 percent)

In the week of 12 to 18 February, an average of 2,005.9 new infections with the corona virus were diagnosed daily. That’s an increase of 5 percent compared to the previous seven-day period.

Currently, an average of 38,246.7 corona tests are administered daily. That’s a 16 percent decrease from the previous seven-day period.

The percentage of tests that turn out to be positive, the so-called positivity ratio, increases slightly. This is now 6 percent, which is 1 percent higher than in the last seven-day period. This increase is probably related to the decrease in the number of tests administered. With a positivity ratio of 6 percent, our country is once again one percent above the 5 percent threshold that the World Health Organization uses to control the crisis. However, experts in our country want to see this figure fall to 3 percent before introducing easing.

Average of 119.1 hospital admissions per day (-0 percent)

The number of hospital admissions also continues to decline slightly. This now concerns an average of 119.1 admissions per day. That is exactly the same amount as in the previous seven-day period.

In total there were 1,617 people in hospital yesterday after being infected with the corona virus. That is 51 more than the day before. 329 of these are in intensive care units. That is 15 more than the day before. 165 people must be artificially ventilated.

Average of 37.3 deaths per day (-10 percent)

Between 12 and 18 February, an average of 37.3 people died every day from the effects of a corona infection. That is also a decrease of 10 percent compared to a week earlier. In total, 21,903 people have already died from Covid-19 in our country.

At present, 403,980 people in our country have already been vaccinated against the corona virus for the first time. In proportion, 4.38 percent of the Belgian population over 18 years of age is currently partially vaccinated against the corona virus. That amounts to 3.52 percent of the entire population. 263,064 Belgians have already received a second dose of the corona vaccine. That corresponds to 2.85 percent of the population.
