After a long decline, the number of hospital admissions is on the rise again. The decline had already become very small in recent days, but now the figure is rising again for the first time. The positivity rate in our country is also increasing slightly.
In the latest figures on the Sciensano dashboard, we see that most figures about the corona virus in our country are declining further. The past few days have been a decline in all numbers, but today we are again seeing increases on the dashboard.
On average 1,963.4 new infections per day (-6 percent)
In the week of 12 to 18 January, an average of 1,963.4 new infections were diagnosed daily. That is a decrease of 6 percent compared to the previous seven-day period. At the beginning of this week, this figure rose above 2,000, but it has been below that limit again for a few days. In total, 686,827 Belgians have been infected with the corona virus in our country.
Currently, an average of 42,157 tests are administered daily. That is a decrease of 5 percent compared to a week earlier. This decrease can be explained by the fact that the end of the Christmas holidays is no longer included in the average. Then a lot of people returned from a trip. Recently, all travelers returning from a red zone are obliged to undergo two tests.
The percentage of tests that turn out to be positive, the so-called positivity ratio, is increasing for the first time in a long time. This is now at 5.4 percent and is 0.1 percent higher than a week ago. This means that our country is still close to the 5 percent threshold that the World Health Organization uses to see the crisis under control. However, experts in our country want to see this figure fall to 3 percent before introducing easing.
Average of 125.3 hospital admissions per day (+3 percent)
The number of hospital admissions is increasing for the first time in a long time. This is now an average of 125.3 per day, which is an increase of 3 percent. The numbers here have been declining for a while, but the decline narrowed to 2 percent yesterday and is now turning into an increase.
A total of 1,941 people were hospitalized yesterday after being infected with the corona virus. That is 1 percent more than the day before. Of these, 338 are in intensive care units. That is also an increase of 1 percent compared to the day before. 182 people need artificial respiration.
Average of 49 deaths per day (-9 percent)
There is still a decrease in the number of deaths. Between 12 and 18 January an average of 49 people died every day from the effects of a corona infection. That is a decrease of 9 percent compared to a week earlier. In total, 20,620 people in our country have already died from Covid-19.
At the moment, 141,758 people in our country have already been vaccinated against the corona virus for the first time. This concerns the first phase of the vaccinations that take place among residents and staff of residential care centers.
In proportion, 1.54 percent of the Belgian population over 18 years of age is currently partially vaccinated against the corona virus.
