The number of coronavirus infections in our country is increasing for the third day in a row. Just like yesterday, there is also an increase in the number of hospital admissions. The positivity ratio continues to increase and is now at 6.5 percent. The number of deaths from the corona virus continues to decline.
In the latest figures on the Sciensano dashboard, we see that the number of new coronavirus infections is rising again. Earlier this week there was an increase for the first time in more than ten days. The positivity ratio is also increasing. Hospital admissions show a slight increase today. The number of deaths is still decreasing.
Average of 2,170.7 new infections per day (+19 percent)
In the week from 14 to 20 February, an average of 2,170.7 new coronavirus infections were diagnosed daily. That’s an increase of 19 percent compared to the previous seven-day period.
Currently, an average of 37,499.9 corona tests are administered daily. That’s a decrease of 13 percent compared to the previous seven-day period.
The percentage of tests that turn out to be positive, the so-called positivity ratio, increases slightly. This is now 6.5 percent, which is 1.4 percent higher than in the last seven-day period. This increase is probably related to the decrease in the number of tests administered. With a positivity ratio of 6.5 percent, our country is more than one percent above the 5 percent threshold that the World Health Organization uses to control the crisis. Experts in our country, however, want to see this figure fall to 3 percent before introducing easing.
Average 123.9 hospital admissions per day (+5 percent)
The number of hospital admissions is also increasing. This now concerns an average of 123.9 admissions per day. That is 5 percent more than in the previous seven-day period.
A total of 1,707 people were in hospital yesterday after being infected with the corona virus. That is one person less a day earlier. Of these, 355 are in intensive care units. That is 7 more than the day before. 176 people need artificial respiration.
Average of 34.1 deaths per day (-11.3 percent)
Between 14 and 20 February, an average of 34.1 people died every day from the effects of a corona infection. That is also a decrease of 11.2 percent compared to a week earlier. In total, 21,956 people have already died of Covid-19 in our country.
At the moment, 416,129 people have already been vaccinated against the corona virus for the first time in our country. In proportion, 4.51 percent of the Belgian population over 18 years of age is currently partially vaccinated against the corona virus. That amounts to 3.62 percent of the entire population. 272,031 Belgians have already received a second dose of the corona vaccine. That corresponds to 2.95 percent of the adults and 2.37 percent of the total population.
