The number of coronavirus infections in our country is now increasing for the third day in a row. Just like yesterday and the day before yesterday, there is also an increase in the number of hospital admissions. The positivity ratio continues to increase and is now at 6.6 percent. The number of deaths from the corona virus continues to decline.
In the latest figures on the Sciensano dashboard, we see that the number of new coronavirus infections is rising again. Earlier this week there was an increase for the first time in more than ten days and since then the number of new infections has been increasing every day. The positivity ratio also continues to rise, as does the number of hospital admissions.
Average of 2,201.4 new infections per day (+20 percent)
In the week from 15 to 21 February, an average of 2,201.4 new infections with the corona virus were detected daily. That’s an increase of 20 percent compared to the previous seven-day period.
Currently, an average of 37,650.3 corona tests are administered daily. That is a decrease of 12 percent compared to the previous seven-day period.
The percentage of tests that turn out to be positive, the so-called positivity ratio, increases slightly. This is now 6.6 percent, which is 1.5 percent higher than in the last seven-day period. With a positivity ratio of 6.6 percent, our country is more than one percent above the 5 percent threshold used by the World Health Organization to control the crisis. Experts in our country, however, want to see this figure fall to 3 percent before introducing easing.
Average of 125.6 hospital admissions per day (+5 percent)
The number of hospital admissions is also increasing. This now concerns an average of 125.6 admissions per day. That is 5 percent more than in the previous seven-day period.
A total of 1,748 people were hospitalized yesterday after being infected with the corona virus. That is 21 more than the day before. Of these, 362 are in intensive care units. That is 7 more than the day before. 178 people must be artificially ventilated.
Average of 30.3 deaths per day (-24.3 percent)
Between 15 and 21 February, an average of 30.3 people died every day from the effects of a corona infection. That is also a decrease of 24.3 percent compared to a week earlier. In total, 21,988 people have already died of Covid-19 in our country.
At present, 428,729 people in our country have already been vaccinated against the corona virus for the first time. In proportion, 4.65 percent of the Belgian population over 18 years of age is currently partially vaccinated against the corona virus. That amounts to 3.73 percent of the entire population. 280,839 Belgians have already received a second dose of the corona vaccine. That equates to 3.05 percent of adults and 2.44 percent of the total population.
