After about two months of closure and emergency care, the daycare centers and primary schools in another ten federal states will open again this Monday, February 22nd. In Lower Saxony, primary school students have been teaching alternately since January, while daycare centers and primary schools in Saxony started their restricted regular operations again on February 15.
In the respective federal states, lessons should either take place alternately – with half classes that come to school alternately – or in full operation, i.e. with fixed groups that should not meet if possible. More or all of the children are looked after in the daycare centers. Each federal state regulates the details for itself.
Rising incidence and mutations must be “considered”
Federal Minister of Education Anja Karliczek supports this gradual return to normal school and daycare. “It is good that many schools in Germany are now gradually starting classroom teaching again,” said the CDU politician. Classroom teaching cannot be replaced by anything. “Children, especially younger ones, need each other.”
In view of the increasing numbers of infections, Karliczek also called for “to take all available means to prevent virus transmission” in order to be able to keep the school going in the next few weeks. On Monday morning, the health authorities reported 4,369 new corona infections and 62 deaths to the Robert Koch Institute within one day. The number of new infections reported is usually lower on Monday because fewer tests are carried out on the weekend. The seven-day incidence rose to 61 – from 57.8 most recently. According to a report by the “Tagesschau”, the value has risen for the third day in a row, after initially having been falling for weeks. On Sunday the incidence was 60.2.
This latest development in the number of infections deserves the greatest attention, said Anja Karliczek – and also referred to the feared spread of new virus variants. “That must also be considered when running the school. But I am sure that the federal states will take this into account when deciding to open the facility. ”The Federal Minister had already spoken out in favor of giving primary school teachers and daycare teachers higher priorities for vaccinations. Your CDU party colleague and Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn wants to discuss this with his country colleagues in the afternoon.
Controversial: change vaccination regulations for teachers?
With a view to the opening of elementary schools and daycare centers, Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and Prime Minister Spahn had commissioned to check whether elementary school teachers and kindergarten teachers could be given higher priority for vaccinations. The Corona vaccination ordinance would have to be changed so that, according to the Federal Statistical Office, around one million people affected move from group three (higher priority) to group two (high priority).
Several countries and Spahn are in favor. That would take a good week, until the beginning of March, said the minister in the ARD. The Baden-Württemberg Minister of Social Affairs, Manfred Lucha, announced for his state that from this Monday on, educators, teachers and doctors “and everyone from the medical field” should be vaccinated.
The German Foundation for Patient Protection fears that in this way the seriously ill from group three will fall behind. “If professional groups are to be set even further ahead, it will cost lives,” said Foundation Board Member Eugen Brysch. The health expert of the Union parliamentary group, Karin Maag, also warned in the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” on Monday: “We have done well that we have largely adopted the recommendations of the Standing Vaccination Commission.” If you do not do that, you “come into very difficult considerations “, Says Maag.
