Coronavirus: Hospital admissions and infections are declining, but deaths are rising

Almost all corona figures in our country are going in the right direction. The number of Covid patients admitted to hospital and the number of new coronavirus infections are declining. The latter can be partly explained by the fact that less testing is done. On the other hand, the number of deaths is going up again slightly.

According to the most recent figures from Sciensano, the average number of new corona infections per day has decreased by 19 percent. In the week of 5 to 11 February, 1,882 new infections were diagnosed every day. The week before, there was an average of 2,054 new infections every day.

Less testing, same positivity ratio

This decrease can partly be explained by a decrease in the number of tests administered. In the same week, an average of 45,600 people were tested every day for infection with the corona virus. The week before that, that number was 10 percent higher, at 49,400.

The positivity ratio – the number of positive tests compared to the total number – remains roughly the same. It is now at 5 percent. This means that an average of 5 out of 100 tests returns positive. Last week, that figure was 5.1.

Hospital admissions

During the past week (ie between 8 and 14 February), an average of 119 corona patients were admitted to Belgian hospitals every day. That’s a drop of 10 percent compared to the figures from a week earlier. At the time, this involved an average of 126 admissions every day.

Yesterday, on February 14, 91 more Covid patients were hospitalized. 50 others were allowed to return home. That brings the total to 1,598 corona patients in the hospital. 307 of them are in intensive care units. 178 people need artificial respiration.

It is the second day in a row that the total occupancy in Belgian hospitals is below 1,600. It has been since October 12 since that happened.

The number of people dying from the effects of Covid-19 has increased. In the week from 5 to 11 February, an average of 41 people died every day from the effects of the disease. That’s an increase of 6 percent compared to the figures for the week before. In total, 21,662 fellow countrymen have already succumbed to the consequences of the corona virus.

According to the most recent figures (from 13 February), 365,355 Belgians have already received a first vaccination against Covid-19. That’s just under 4 percent of the population. 186,277 people have already been fully vaccinated. That’s just over 2 percent of the adult population.
