The corona numbers don’t look good. All parameters keep increasing, and sad records are broken every day. For example, the milestone of 10,000 infections in one day was passed on Tuesday 13 October.
The last known daily figure is that of four days ago. Sciensano takes that time to check all data. Four days ago, on Tuesday October 13, another sad record was broken. That day for the first time more than 10,000 infections were diagnosed. 10,369 to be exact.
Average of 6,674 infections
That record number of infections brings the average to 6,674 per day. That’s an increase of 97 percent, just not doubling the number from the week before. In total, more than 200,000 Belgians have now been infected with the virus. 202,151 to be exact. These figures can all be found on the Sciensano website.
Every day, an average of 48,414 corona tests are administered in our country. Those are the last known figures, from 6 to 13 October. That’s an increase of 33 percent from the week before. Wednesday was a peak of no less than 72,000 tests. But Wednesday was the 14th, so those tests are not included in the average.
More than 13 percent of the tests are positive
Not only the number of tests is increasing enormously. The number of positive tests compared to the total also continues to rise alarmingly. Sciensano spoke of a positivity ratio of 13.3 percent in the week of October 6 to 13. That’s good for almost 6,450 a day.
A week earlier, “only” 8.94 percent of the tests administered were positive. In comparison, according to the World Health Organization WHO, the threshold for controlling the epidemic is 5 percent.
Average of 207 hospital admissions
Yesterday, 240 corona patients were admitted to Belgian hospitals. That brings the average to 207 per day. A week earlier that average was still 107.
In total, just under 2,100 corona patients (2,098 to be precise) are now in hospital. Of these, 358 are in intensive care units. 172 of them receive supplemental oxygen.
An average of 25 deaths
Every day an average of 25 people die from the effects of Covid-19. That’s up 11.7 percent from a week earlier. Then there were 13 deaths a day. In total, the counter now stands at 10,359 deaths.
According to the latest confirmed daily figure died on Tuesday October 13 33 people. The figures of a day later are not yet definitive. But for now, 41 people died from Covid-19 on Wednesday, October 14.
