Coronel fights for WTCR victory in Slovakia

The second race of the day got off to a chaotic start, which quickly resulted in a number of retirements in the opening lap. Nestor Girolami was allowed to start the race from pole position, but behind that it soon came to a collision between Jean-Karl Vernay and Santiago Urrutia, which also resulted in the Honda of Girolami. Also further back things went wrong with Gabriele Tarquini as the main victim. The Italian got stranded in the gravel with his Hyundai, which immediately brought the Safety Car onto the track.

Esteban Guerrieri had been able to take advantage of the chaotic start by taking the lead, but with a second place Tom Coronel had also managed to gain the necessary ground at the start. However, the Dutchman was not satisfied with second place and decided to attack Guerrieri in the eighth round. In the last corner, the Audi driver took his chance and managed to take the lead from Guerrieri, who also had to give up second place to Gilles Magnus.

Coronel wins, heavy blow to Girolami

The race eventually had a spectacular finish after a collision between Jean-Karl Vernay and Nestor Girolami. The latter eliminated himself and crashed into the crash barriers at high speed, completely writing off his Honda. Fortunately, the Argentinian was able to get out unharmed.

Coronel at the front did not take much notice of the chaos behind him and thus crossed the finish line first after eleven laps. The Dutchman thus took his first victory in four years at the highest level of touring car racing. For the Comtoyou Racing team it was already the second success of the day, as teammate Nathanaël Berthon had already won the first race earlier in the day.

Coronel – who moves up to second place in the championship with the victory – shared the podium with Gilles Magnus and Esteban Guerrieri. Nick Catsburg also finished in points thanks to a hard-fought sixth place.
