In December 2020, the award givers of game e. V. all sorts of things to do. Last month, eight video games received a game sales award for milestones achieved. Most of the games benefit from the Christmas business, of course, and most of them were not new releases. Animal Crossing, The Last of Us, Spider-Man and Co. benefited from the cumulative numbers that made new awards possible.
Outstanding results achieved thereby Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which won the second Game Sales Award special prize in December. This means that the game has now sold over a million units in Germany. Also caused a stir Cyberpunk 2077, which achieves the special price after just three weeks. A special price in the month of launch, that’s usually a FIFA thing. Cyberpunk 2077 was able to sell itself over 500,000 times in Germany despite all the negative press. These awards went out in December:
game Sales Award – special price for 500,000 units:
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons (1,000,000 total units)
- Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
- Cyberpunk 2077
- The Last of Us Part II
game Sales Award – Platinum for 200,000 units:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
game Sales Award – Gold for 100,000 units:
- 51 Worldwide Games
- Hyrule Warriors: Time of Desolation
- Just Dance 2021
How good are these numbers in comparison?
Many of you keep asking the numbers of the game Sales Awards whether that is a lot or a little. Even 200,000 units are a lot. The platinum award is not the platinum award for nothing, only a few games in Germany achieve the necessary numbers, many of them only accumulated after months.
A few comparative figures: Super Mario Maker 2 didn’t reach 200,000 units until January 2020, half a year after its release. And the Mario level editor is known to be a so-called long seller. Games like Pokémon Sword and Shield are faster, other games like Need for Speed Heat or Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order benefit from the cross-platform count. A game of the caliber The Last of Us Part II will of course go platinum, but then there will be a few months of silence. Blockbusters like Kingdom Hearts III or Resident Evil 2 Remake, on the other hand, have so far “only” made it to the Gold Award, which means 100,000 units sold. Final Fantasy XV also went platinum back then.
By the way: The Final Fantasy VII Remake is currently stagnating somewhere between 100,000 and 200,000 units. After the game sales award in gold (100,000 units) shortly after the publication in April, the cumulative figures are not yet sufficient for the next level, the game sales award in platinum. Not even after Christmas 2020, as it now turned out.
The special price is a special price
Very few brands in Germany play for the special game Sales Award (500,000 units). Most recently, Animal Crossing: New Horizons won a special price in May. Before that, for example, it was Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s turn in November 2019 with a special price. Just like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The Last of Us: Part II and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla did not make the 500,000 units until Christmas. The only representative for whom another category would be worthwhile in Germany is FIFA. FIFA 20 has already received the game Sales Award special prize three times and has sold well over 1.5 million units in Germany.
The data are based on surveys by the market researcher GfK. In contrast to GfK’s weekly sales charts, the surveys for the Game Sales Award also include reported digital sales by publishers.
