Cycling: NTT continues to exist thanks to new main sponsor

09.48 am: The South African cycling team NTT Pro Cycling has secured its survival by attracting a new main sponsor. Swiss ASSOS, which specializes in cycling clothing, is the new lender of team boss Douglas Ryder’s team, which will be called Team Qhubeka ASSOS from next season.

NTT was in financial trouble and it was unclear for a long time whether the team would still exist next season. Last week, the team management reported that the coming period would be dominated by “fighting for the survival of the team”. Ryder has succeeded in this.

“I am really happy to have the support of some incredible people and partners, including ASSOS,” said 48-year-old Ryder. “I look forward to making new plans and preparing for a new season. Our team has always been about much more than victories, but we love to win. ”

Qhubeka is a South African charity that donates bicycles to people through crowdfunding. The foundation has been associated with the cycling team for years.

At NTT, which has been called Dimension Data for the past few years, quite a few people have left in recent weeks. Team manager Bjarne Riis, who for a time was one of the main candidates for a takeover of the team, announced that he would stop. Cyclists Louis Meintjes, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Michael Valgren and Ben O’Connor also left and found shelter elsewhere.
