Cyclist Fabio Jakobsen has won a virtual sprint competition. The Dutch champion was the best in the Challenge of the Stars. He competed on the dynamometer with eight competitors on a gently sloping track of 1.2 kilometers in Tuscany.
The virtual challenge took the form of a knockout, starting with quarter-finals. Jakobsen first eliminated Danish world champion Mads Pedersen, then defeated German sprinter Pascal Ackermann in the semi-finals and won in the final against Italian time rider Filippo Ganna.
“I would rather ride the Tour of Italy now, but these kind of race formats are fun to do and I must confess that I was quite nervous,” said the Deceuninck – Quick-Step rider, who, like his colleagues in the peloton cannot race due to the coronavirus.
On Sunday there is another Challenge of the Stars, but for climbers. Vincenzo Nibali is participating, as are Chris Froome and Jakob Fuglsang.
