Basketball: Timberwolves pick Edwards favorite in NBA draft

7.46 am: Minnesota Timberwolves has chosen the talented Anthony Edwards in the draft of the NBA. The 19-year-old American was number 1 on the list of upcoming talents.

Edwards impressed the University of Georgia, where he averaged 19 points per game. He will be with the Timberwolves, who did not make the play-offs last season, teammate of Karl-Anthony Towns and D’Angelo Russell.

“I feel like I’m going to be a perfect fit for those guys, because Russell likes to play off the ball every now and then and I can play the ball well,” Edwards said during a virtual press conference. “And Towns is the best man for three-pointers in the league. So I guess it can’t go wrong with that. We have a lot of choice. ”

Golden State Warriors chose 19-year-old James Wiseman in the NBA draft. The draft, postponed this year due to the corona virus, is intended to allow young basketball players to apply for a career in the NBA.

The new season in the NBA starts on Tuesday, December 22. Most clubs start their preparation at the beginning of December. Last season, Los Angeles Lakers took the title by beating the Miami Heat 4-2 in the NBA Finals.

Cycling: KNWU Congress elects chairman

07.00 am: The members of the congress of the KNWU cycling association will vote on Thursday evening on who should succeed departing chairman Marcel Wintels. An election was not planned. The same congress previously determined that a suitable and widely supported candidate would be sought through an application procedure who would make a vote superfluous.

In August, the application committee presented Marc van den Tweel as intended chairman. The director of Natuurmonumenten is seen as the best candidate to lead the cycling association. Riders’ union VVBW did not agree with the procedure and choice and presented a rival candidate: Gerry van Gerwen. The VVBW represents professional cyclists who are concerned about the lack of Dutch drivers in international organizations. With his many contacts as a former rider and former sports director, Van Gerwen has to change that.

The KNWU has a statutory obligation to accept an opposing candidate, which means that it can still be exciting on Thursday. Twelve of the 35 eligible voters represent riders, teams or organizers. The eight districts each have two votes. The other voices come from artificial cycling (1 vote) and BMX (6 votes).
